Olu's Reading List

I read this book while I was waiting to leave for the Peace Corps. This book gave me incredible insight on how to be an effective volunteer in a third world country.
Excellent book on island biogeography. I enjoyed every page! This book is about species extinction and what the study of species distributions on islands tells us about extinctions. Furthermore, he applies island biogeography to biogeography of the continents. With our increased disruption of the landscape, we are essentially creating islands on land within an ocean of man-made roads, highways, cities, (zoogeograophical barriers) etc... This is a book that I highly recommend anyone to read! |

WOW!!! Excellent book. You will never see the world and humanity the same ever! Daniel Quinn enlightens us of the impending future we face if we do not stop thinking the way our culture has taught us from birth. We need to stop listening to the dull hum of mother culture's voice telling us to consume. We (humans) are members of the biological community, not its rulers or conquerers. The world was not made for man...we are not that special.
A very entertaining and enlightening book about science and nature. I enjoyed reading David Quammen's essays entailing his thoughts and interpretation of the many different pecularities of life immensely. He makes the study of nature fun and exciting.
Again, David Quammen's essays are thought provoking and incredibly amusing. He is by far one of my favorite essayist of nature. I highly recommend any of his books.
A must read for everyone. It is an eye-opening account of mankind's ignorance and lack of common sense. Furthermore, the use of these biocides continues even today. The chemicals that are banned in the United States are still being produced and exported to other countries. When will this idiocy end!
Rachel Carson brings alive the poetry of marine biology. This book is a classic. She gives thoughtful insight on the consequences of man's mistreatment of our natural environment, in particular, the seas and oceans. The fears she availed fifty years ago are sadly becoming true. We need to educate the need for conservation and change the way we live before any real change will occur.
Aldo Leopold's essays should be read by anyone who considers himself/herself a conservationist. The ideas and concepts conveyed in this historical conservation book should be conveyed to everyone. Changing attitudes of people is the only hope for our planet, the many wonderful flora and fauna living on it, and of course us, Homo sapiens. We need to develop a land ethic and stop measuring the value of a species, ecosystem, and natural resource using only an economic yardstick. Is there hope for us?
In progress. | |
