Based on an analysis of the Pura Purana, a holy
lontar book, which is an historical record of the temple, the
Holy Monkey Temples were built during the mid-14th century during
the Pejeng Dynasty or in the early Gegel Dynasty. The Balinese
macaques, Macaca fasicularis, that reside in the forest
number approximately 200: 23 adult males, 79 adult females, and
98 young. These monkeys live in three family groups which tend
to use different parts of the forest at different times of the
day. The sacred monkey forest serves not only as an important
component in the spiritual and daily lives of the villagers, but
is the site of several research and conservation programs
